As manager Adie Moran left the pitch at the end of 90 minutes he was heard to say to supporters that his side had, "Got out of jail," and he was not kidding.
Heys put in one of their worst performances for a long time, and were second best all over the park to an excellent Amateurs team who must be still wondering how they left Sandgate without a point.
The game opened with both sides prepared to attack each other at every opportunity.
Heys were rewarded on 10 minutes when Lee Connell fired into the bottom corner to give his side the lead.
However, ten minutes, later Monton were level when the excellent Collier outpaced the flat-footed Heys' defence to slot the ball past Caldwell.
Worse was to follow 15 minutes later when Cunningham gave the ball away to Collier and he put in a delightful chip over Caldwell to give Monton a deserved 2-1 lead.
The visitors were totally dominating all aspects of the game and it looked only a matter of time before they would increase their lead.
They should have had a penalty when Cunningham again gave the ball away and Chapman, after rounding Caldwell, struck a superb strike that was heading for the top corner, only for Cunningham to palm the ball away.
Unbelievably the referee only gave Monton a corner!
Play went straight up the other end and Jason Dormer produced an excellent piece of individual skill to volley the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-2 at half time.
The second half was only 10 minutes old when the unmarked Chapman was allowed a free header at the back post to make it 3-2 to Monton.
Towers really should have done better when Taylor gave the ball away on the edge of the box, but presented with a one-on-one with the keeper, he unfortunately for Heys he put it wide.
The home side made a triple substitution with Hutchinson , Sensale and Uddin introduced with 15 minutes to go to try and salvage at least a point.
Heys were back on terms five minutes from time when Taylor won a header at the back post and Howson finished in style.
Then, four minutes later Heys unbelievably got another.
Lee Connell forced a great save from Monton keeper Mortimer goal but Andy Sensale netted the rebound to make the score 4-3 and grab three points for the Heys.
