The judge for Prestwich Co-op Camera Club's October Assignment For Prints and Slides was one of our own members - ex-chairman Roy Taylor.
He approached this task with a little concern - particularly when he found there were 33 prints entered, which is something of a record for the club.
Roy examined each print carefully, looking for the good and the weakness - if any - in each. He was careful to count the number of objects to make sure that they were in odd numbers!
He was quite generous with his marks out of 20. For the most part he gave 17 or above. Fewer than a quarter were given a mark of 15 or less.
In the final analysis, Roy selected Allan Hardman's 'Where's the Fox?' for third place. Allen had found a hunting scene with the hounds, horses and a huntsman in proper hunting pink to make a very colourful scene.
In second place was Geoff Wilson's 'The End of the Pier'. This was just a row of posts from an old jetty pointing out to sea, but Roy liked it.
Vernon Barlow came first with his view 'Down the Pier'. This may have been taken early in the morning or out of season, as there were no people about to spoil the clean lines.
When it came to judging the slides, life was much easier for Roy as there were only 13 of them, all of them taken outdoors.
Eddie Evans scored the second and third places. In third place was a view of the 'Bell Tower, Heaton Park'. Eddie had framed this with a tree and it was nicely positioned in the frame.
Second was a view through the 'Buttress Arches at Winchester Cathedral'. There were the receding arches with all the light coming from one side and a small board or easel at the end.
In first place was John Thompson's 'Hi There!' John had caught a mask apparently peeping round a bright red door in a bright red wall - very colourful!
On Wednesday, September 27, the Audio-Visual group went to Rochdale Photographic Society to give them one of our audio visual shows. They were suitably impressed and made a handsome donation to our club funds.
The exhibition of Prestwich Co-op Camera Club prints closes at Bury Met at 4pm on Saturday, October 8 so you haven't much time to see it. Join the queue!
Next Tuesday, October 11, there is a folio of monochrome prints. This branch of photography is becoming out of fashion so come along to the side door of the Bridge Methodist Hall, behind Radcliffe Library between 7.30 and 8 pm and see how well it can be used.
