FROM THE RADCLIFFE TIMES, MAY 13, 1955: While Labour retained their hold over Bury South in last week's General Election, they were being commiserated 50 years ago as the Municipal Party swept to power in Radcliffe.
The Municipal Party won every seat it contested and reduced the Labour representation on the Council from 14 to nine. The Labour Party's only two survivors of the election were from Bridge Ward, where the Municipal Party were only contesting one of the three seats.
l The fire brigade was called to Walker Street in Radcliffe when a stand-alone lamp in the street became so hot that the paint began to bubble and peel off. Gas had been escaping from the lamp standard.
l Riderless horses were stopped by police as they galloped along Bolton Road, Radcliffe, in the direction of Bolton. They were guided into a field after causing chaos on the roads.
l Rock Hudson was busy at the cinema with The Lawless Breed being shown at the Picturedrome and Magnificent Obsession at the Odeon.
l Radcliffe Labour Party sent a bunch of flowers to 94-year-old Hannah Knights, of Milltown Street, who was believed to be Radcliffe's oldest resident.
