SPEEDING motorists at a notorious accident blackspot in Holcombe will soon be slowed down by two vehicle-activated warning signs.

They will be installed in Lumb Carr Road, one permanent one on an approaching bend and a temporary one near Emmanuel Holcombe Primary School, flashing a warning triangle to encourage motorists to slow down.

The road is notorious for accidents, with four in six days last month. Mrs Gillian Wilson and her four children escaped serious injury following a collision with an oncoming car at the bend in the road during a morning school-run. Her 14-year-old daughter, Heidi, had to be cut free from the wreckage, along with the driver of the other car.

Less than 36 hours later, an 18-year-old passenger had to be cut free from a car which crashed into a lamp post on the same stretch of road. At tea-time on the same day two cars collided on nearby Holcombe Old Road causing minor injuries. Another car crashed into a wall less than a week later.

The site for the solar-powered permanent sign was identified as a hotspot several months ago by highway bosses and news of the temporary sign was confirmed at the Ramsbottom, Tottington and North Manor Area Board.

A Bury Council spokesman said the permanent sign would be operational by late October and added: "The other sign closer to the school is a temporary one being sited by Greater Manchester Police and will again urge motorists to reduce their speed."

Frances Ireland, who was involved in the collision in Holcombe Old Road, welcomed the news. Mrs Ireland, from Holcombe village, said: "I think it is a great idea. That road needs everything it can get."
