RMI 0, WORKINGTON TOW 1: THERE are some days when not much goes right. Saturday was one of those days for Leigh RMI.
There was little between two sides who battled away manfully but failed to finish off any of a number of chances they created until Lee Atherton's error had Workington the decisive goal.
The central defender had been cool and collected until the 56th minute when he tried to pass the ball across the face of his own goal, only for Craig Johnston to gratefully intercept and hammer his shot past a helpless keeper.
With the visitors tightening up at the back, all looked lost until the 70th minute when RMI finally thought fortune had gone their way when Lee Hollickin needlessly brought down Chris Simm on the edge of the box. Up stepped Andy Roscoe, but despite two bites of the cherry, failed to equalise.
The skipper's spot kick was well saved by Adam Collin diving to his right, but although the ball rebounded back to Roscoe he lashed a shot straight back at the keeper.
Lee Thompson had enough chances in the first half to have given RMI an advantage but twice, with only the keeper to beat, he failed to hit the target.
Leigh introduced new signing Leon Mike in the second half and although the former Manchester City and Aberdeen striker produced several neat touches, he looked well short of match practice.
