WIGAN ATHLETIC 2, Wanderers 1: Euro heroes and Premiership high-flyers Wanderers were brought down to earth by their near neighbours who they last played in the old Third Division more than a decade ago.
After a first-half in which Latics could have been three up, Henri Camara gave the home team the lead on 48 minutes and then Lee McCulloch added a fantastic second on 63.
Rahdi Jaidi then pulled one back three minutes later as Wanderers finally began to get in the game, but it needed a sterling performance from Jussi Jaaskelainen to give them a chance.
Latics fans have been looking forward to this game since the fixtures were announced and enjoyed every minute of their team's wonderful performance.
For Wanderers manager Sam Allardyce it was simply confirmation that the after affects of Thursday games in the UEFA Cup - they only travelled back from Bulgaria on Friday afternoon - will prove an important factor with four group games set to domininate fixture changes in the next couple of months.
