I CONGRATULATE First Manchester on taking delivery of a fleet of eight new low floor vehicles (Bolton Evening News, September 27), but I must question why these are being used exclusively on the 575 service between Bolton and Horwich.
Why can't these super new vehicles be spread about on all routes within the town?
I live in Great Lever, where the bus routes 571 and 572 are abysmal. They are supposed to be every 15 minutes (seven or eight minutes circular), but instead you can wait at least half a hour or so.
At the same time, we have to put up with antiquated double deckers. Only on the odd occasion do we see low floor vehicles, mainly in the evenings or on a Sunday.
Even then, these can be the older type single decker, making it very difficult not only for disabled passengers, but also for young mothers and families with pushchairs and prams. Wheelchair users have no chance.
As a disabled person, I have been campaigning for all bus operators, including First Manchester, to provide at least one low floor vehicle to be incorporated within the timetables on all their services.
They should also accept responsibility when a service fails to operate for whatever reason. But my campaign has been to no avail.
I can only wish the 575 service good luck, and trust First Manchester will keep to their promise to provide a ten minute frequency.
