From the Guide files of Friday, November 2, 1979: WHITEFIELD Ambulance Station bade farewell to two senior ambulance officers with a total of 60 years service. Colin Heath and Leslie Roberts retired after a long and dedicated service.
FIRE crews rescued a Prestwich family from a top floor flat after a calor gas heater burst into flames. Mr Noel Jaggard, his wife Florence and her brother Mr Jack Furlong were trapped in the flat in Bolton Close, off Butterstile Lane.
SCHOOLBOY Ian Docherty was granted a trial with Everton Football Club. The 15-year-old pupil at Whitefield High School must have impressed the Scouts as he was invited back for a further trial at Christmas.
A TRIP to Yorkshire paid off for Sedgley Park 1st team. They beat Cleckheaton 19-3.
A 63-STRONG group of Scouts, Venture Scouts and leaders of Prestwich and Whitefield District took part in an overnight hike. The group left Whitefield station on Saturday night to complete the overnight hike in Derbyshire.
