l PRESTWICH councillor Vic Guthrie was put forward to be the next Mayor of Bury. Coun Guthrie was set to be the third Metro Mayor from Prestwich since the reorganisation of local government in 1974. He and his wife, Joan, lived in Elm Grove, Prestwich.

l THIEVES stole a Christmas haul of £1,600 worth of gold and silver jewellery in a daring smash and grab raid. The robbery took place at E. Kaye's jewellers in Bury New Road, Whitefield, not far from the police station.

l A FORMER Mayoress of Prestwich, Mrs Bertha Collins, was the victim of a robbery. Thieves broke into her home in Craigwell Road and stole £2,000 worth of gems and silverware.

l SEDGLEY Park RUFC trounced Prestwich in a local derby game. After plenty of overnight rain which made the first team pitch unplayable, the game was played on the A team pitch at Park Lane. Final score was Sedgley Park 14 Prestwich 0.
