From the Guide files of Friday, May 11, 1979: PLAYERS at Sedgley Park Rugby Club succeeded in making the longest try in the world, and were hoping it would officially be recognised in the record books. The 15 men smashed the existing record of 680 miles with a try of 737 miles and 50 yards at the ground in Park Lane, Whitefield.
THE OSTRICH Hotel in Prestwich was awarded the Joe Goodwin Cup after finishing in sixth place in a pile of pennies competition.
Licensee Tom Kennedy and his regulars managed to raise £586.60 for charity.
WHITEFIELD councillor Derek Boden was elected as leader of the Labour Group. Coun Boden, of Thatch Leach Lane, succeeded Coun Jack Skellen who did not seek re-election in recent elections. Deputy was Laurie Bullas.
AN 11-year-old boy was robbed of £200 outside Barclays Bank in Prestwich. The boy was attacked by two men as he deposited the takings from a local butcher's shop in the night safe.
A PARTY of 57 pupils from Stand Girls School, Parrenthorn School and members of the Whitefield Girls' Venture Corps set off to see HRH Prince Philip. The group had completed either bronze or silver in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.
