From the Guide files of Friday, January 18, 1980: TWO Whitefield firemen received medals for long service and good conduct.
Fireman Joseph Hackney, of Rochford Avenue, and sub-officer Lawrence Smith, of Kenmore Close, accepted their awards from the Lord Lieutenant Sir William Downward.
l VANDALS took pot shots at businesses in the Longfield Centre with what was believed to be an air rifle. Shopkeepers arrived at work to find windows peppered with holes and damage came to around £2,000.
l FRIENDS mourned the death of the former divisional superintendent for Heaton Park, Mr Arthur Edward Goves. Affectionately known as Ted, Mr Goves (70) spent a lifetime in horticulture and took over the park in 1955.
l THE MINISTER for health and social services, Mr Patrick Jenkins, visited Whitefield. Mr Jenkins spoke at the Whitefield Conservative Associations annual dinner about cuts in social services and his future plans for the health service.
l WITH something to prove after conceding ten goals to this side some weeks ago, Stand travelled to Poynton AFC. Despite not having the services of regular defenders Parkes and Mayers, the team put together a fine effort to return with an excellent draw.
