RECENTLY my partner and I once again had to dig a grave in our garden and bury our beloved Siamese cat Winnie, who, like her friend Dobbie, was killed by a motorist on Tottington Road in Harwood.
We and our neighbours have become increasingly concerned about the excessive speeding of cars, buses and motorcyclists up and down Tottington Road.
In the last six months, not only has my family witnessed the death of both of our cats (in one case the driver didnt even bother to stop), but our car wing mirror and rear lights have been smashed twice by vehicles speeding past, a neighbours dog has been hit, and on several occasions we ourselves have narrowly avoided being hit by a speeding motorist.
We have expressed our concerns to both the police and the council. We are sure it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident.
Last Saturday at midday, a mobile camera unit, set up for just one hour, caught more than 25 motorists speeding up and down Tottington Road, all of whom will be prosecuted - however, the council appears unwilling to provide a permanent solution.
Do I have to stand over the grave of my partner or my child before the local authority recognises its responsibility in protecting my safety and that of my neighbours?
Not only are speeding motorists breaking the law and killing our pets, but theyre also robbing us of our sense of security.
Can readers advise on what other measures we can take to ensure motorists observe the 30mph speed limit on Tottington Road, and thereby avoid the terrible grief that results from losing our loved ones to road death?
