THE introduction of free swimming for children under 16 has seen numbers rocket by 90 per cent at Howe Bridge pool during July.
During the same period figures rose at Tyldesley by 58 per cent on the same period last year - and adult swimming totals are well up too. Over 17,500 youngsters have signed up for free sessions since Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust's "Freestyle" initiative was introduced in April following the closure of Atherton's Mayfield Street baths.
Money saved from this paid for the scheme which allows all children with a Lifestyle card free admittance to any of the boroughs five public swimming pools.
