From the Evening News, September 27, 1995: A THIEF wrecked a pensioner's birthday after mugging his wife in a hospital corridor.

As reported in last night's Bolton Evening News, the 69-year-old woman was attacked during a visit to Bolton General Hospital.

Today she told the Bolton Evening News that cards for her sick husband's 71st birthday were in the bag which was snatched by the mugger.

WATER chiefs have drawn up contingency plans to put standpipes on the streets of the North-west within weeks.

They are just 10 days away from applying for an emergency drought order according to general manager for water supply Peter Birtwistle.

BOLTON'S area rural bus services could be among those worst hit under wide ranging economy measures planned by Greater Manchester Transport.

One senior member of staff said it was widely anticipated among employees that country bus services which were not attracting off-peak passengers would be withdrawn.

SHARP-eyed neighbours prevented a Bolton woman's house from going up in flames last night.

When smoke started pouring from a bedroom window at Mrs Dorothy Taylor's council home, people from nearby rushed outside to help.

They heaved blankets and mattresses out of the window and stopped the flames from spreading.

MEMBERS of Bolton Chamber of Trade a representative section of the nation's shopkeepers expressed a divergence of opinion at last night's meeting on the possibility of the introduction of the five-day week.

THOUGH the proposal for another Bolton Festival was recently quashed, there is to be a musical festival held in the town after all.

September 27 1905

BEFORE Judge Bradbury, at the Wigan County Court, on Tuesday, W. H. T. Jenkins, of Leigh, came up for a failure to comply with an order of the court obtained by Peter Dickinson of Ince.

Plaintiff said that immediately the order was made, defendant sold up his farm and said he was going to Canada.

It was found that he went to Ireland, and came back and commenced business in another name.

MR F. W. Thompson, vice-president and managing director of the Ogilvie Flour Mills Company Limited, has just completed a tour of inspection of the Manitoba crops covering several hundred miles of territory.

He reports that the yield exceeds all previous expectations.
