ONE of the brass band world's "giants" will be conducting at a "Triumphant Trafalgar" concert at Bolton's Victoria Hall.
Dr Roy Newsome is one of the leading figures in the history of the British brass movement and his guest appearance is considered a coup by the concert organisers, The Wingates Band.
The concert on Saturday, October 21, is being staged jointly with the New Rosemere Amateur Operatic Society to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Admiral Lord Nelson's triumph over the French and Spanish.
The entire brass and voices programme will have a nautical theme, ending in a "Last Night of the Proms" finale, for which the audience is encouraged to take along their "patriotic paraphernalia".
A highlight will be the premire of a piece of music commissioned for the concert. Called "Trafalgar Day", composed by Manchester-based Martin Lessons.
Yorkshireman Dr Newsome, who for many years presented the BBC radio programme "Listen to the Band", is the only man to have conducted four different bands to the British Open Championships.
He was also the founder of the National Youth Brass Band.
Tickets for the concert are available at £9, with concessions at £8, from Bolton's Albert Halls box office on 01204 334400, or by calling David Kaye on 07970 131460 or Helen Seager on 01204 300666.
