THE firm behind the controversial revamp of Bolton's Market Hall have welcomed plans for a new £100 million shopping, leisure and luxury homes development behind the Victoria Hall.

Agora, which is to transform the Grade II listed Victorian hall into a modern mall, believes the development will strengthen the town's position in the region.

The new scheme proposed by developer Wilson Bowden - which will be decided by planning bosses on Thursday - would see the Central Street area converted into a bustling mecca of high street stores, cafe bars, restaurants and luxury apartments.

It would be built behind a revamped Victoria Hall and feature a first-floor balcony from which bands would entertain shoppers as they mill around a new public square below.

Jason Barnsdale, senior asset manager at Agora Shopping Centres, said: "As a major investor in Bolton, we welcome proposals from other investors which strengthen the town's position within the region.

"Plans which benefit retailing in the town centre, as our £30million investment in the Market Hall does, must be good news for Bolton. We would be pleased to see another part of Bolton being regenerated and further investment which supports the Town Centre Strategy."
