I FEEL sure M Zafar Khan would agree with me that the call to fast-track ethnic police to top jobs within Greater Manchester (September 16) is intrinsically unjust.
All members of the force, from whatever background, should be judged on performance and fair competition in order to progress to these top posts.
This principle should also apply to local government employment. Merit alone should be the criteria for appointment if taxpayers are to get best value for their money.
Were I to be given an advantage because of my ethnicity, I would feel it to be a patronising gesture and therefore an insult.
Quota systems should be scrapped immediately.
