In reply to the Walmersley Road resident who asked for a speed camera to control the problem of the Zebra crossing sorry but a speed camera wont make any difference at all to that problem (Walmersley Road an accident waiting to happen, Letters,
September 8).
Watch any camera in any location and you will see the same thing, drivers only slow down for the camera then speed up again.
Sometimes this is more dangerous because drivers not familiar with the area spotting a camera often slam the brakes on which is another accident in the making. Lets have less accidents, not more.
One thing I think most Walmersley residents are agreed upon is that the crossing in its present form
is lethal.
I crossed there this morning and while a lorry driver on one side of the road stopped, three cars coming the other way simply carried on.
Last Thursday I stopped to let a lady go across, only to be overtaken by a large van which almost flattened her.
Two incidents happening to just one person in less than a week.
The crossing needs a Pelican, because drivers do (usually) react to a red light, but in its present form drivers either simply dont see it or ignore it.
Give both drivers and pedestrians a chance here; surely it isnt worth a life and that is what is at stake now.
