10 YEARS AGO From the Evening News April 21, 1995: MARKET Hall traders in Bolton have won their 18-month battle to escape rent rises of up to 52 per cent.
And now they have vowed to fight for a reduction in other costs they pay Bolton Council.
BOLTON Institute is trying to trace more than 3,700 former students who have never claimed proof of their academic or professional qualifications.
Everything from degrees, diplomas, certificates and City and Guilds from 1947 to 1992 have been piling up at a college storeroom waiting to be claimed.

THE birthplace of one of Bolton's most famous sons was the scene for a plaque ceremony at the weekend organised by the Turton Committee of the Bolton and District Civic Trust.
At Brandwood Fold, off Bolton Road, Edgworth - birthplace of royal physician Sir Thomas Barlow - a commemorative plaque was unveiled by his grandson, Captain Sir Thomas Barlow DSC, RN.
Sir Thomas, who was physician to Queen Victoria, Edward VII and George V, was born at Brandwood Fold in 1845 and died within months of his 100th birthday in January, 1945.
THE first sod has been cut for a new £28,000 community and church hall in Lostock.
Miss Catriona Shaw of Lostock Junction Lane cut the sod as part of the morning service at St Thomas and St John's Church.

April 21, 1955
ALTHOUGH more than 5,000 tons of refuse is swept from Bolton's 290 miles of paved roads during a year, much of this work is immediately negatived by people who indiscriminately scatter bus tickets and orange peel about the footpaths.
Mr C. E. Scowcroft, the Cleansing Superintendent, says there are 250 litter bins in the town and it is hoped to double them.
BOLTON Borough Police are champions of the North-west and Merseyside Police League for the first time, on goal average, after drawing 1-1 with St Helens yesterday.
Tempers became frayed late in the game and two St Helens players and one Bolton player were ordered off the field.

April 20, 1905
SOME uneasiness is being felt in the Edgworth district by an outbreak of measles, as a consequence of which a large number of children are being kept away from school.
In this district and in Turton there is some scarlet fever, though no fresh cases have arisen.
PATRICK Deegan, firebeater, Auckland Street, Pendleton, was summoned at the Bury Police Court yesterday for clandestinely removing goods to avoid a restraint for rent. He owed 12s 3d with costs, 17s 3d.
The death took place on Tuesday, at his residence in Chorley New Road, Horwich, of Mr Rd Millington, conductor for 10 years of the L and Y Band.
