A DJ from Leigh is fighting it out with some of television's top names for a top radio job.

According to media experts, Shaun Keaveny is the front-runner to take over the breakfast show on one of London's leading radio stations - Xfm.

Shaun, aged 33, is currently the mid-morning show host at the station, which runs from 10am until 1pm.

He joined Xfm three years ago with no previous on-air experience, to front the early morning breakfast slot from 3am to 6am.

The former radio advertising copywriter went on to deputise across the Xfm schedule and his voice can now be heard on many TV adverts and programmes.

Shaun, a former pupil of St Mary's High School in Astley, said: "It's very flattering to be linked to such a top slot, but there will be a lot of competition for a job like that."

If Shaun is successful, he would be taking over from Xfm's award-winning Christian O'Connell who has left for rival station Virgin Radio.

The Media Guardian reported that Xfm bosses have approached some well-known names in television about fronting the breakfast show, including Chris Evans, comedian Dom Joly and Sky Sports presenter Tim Lovejoy.

But the report said Keaveny was the "front-runner" and his agent Nicole Constantinou said: "Shaun hasn't been offered the gig, but he's a strong contender."
