Wanderers 2, LOKOMOTIV PLOVDIV 1: Substitute Jared Borgetti, Wanderers' £1m signing from Mexico, was hot stuff for his new team, scoring the late winner as Wanderers' great European adventure began at a rainy, wind-swept Reebok Stadium on Thursday night.
Borgettit finished camly, sidefooting home to the far corner in the 91st minute, although there was a hint of offside, to set up a challenging UEFA Cup first round second leg in Burgas on September 29. Manager Sam Allardyce said of his new striker: "This was what we bought him for."
El-Hadj Diouf had scored a 71st minute headed equaliser to inspire the 20,000 watching fans after Wanderers trailed to a first-half breakaway shock goal converted sharply by Jancevski.
The attendance was 19,723 which in view of the poor weather and live TV coverage on Channel Five was probably better than expected.
Wanderers: Jaaskelainen, Pedersen, Jaidi, N'Gotty, Hunt, Campo, Gardner, Okocha, Nakata, Stelios, Diouf.
Plovdiv: Kolev, Ivanov, Tunchev, Halimi, Jancevski, Iliev, Kotev, Dimitrov, Petrov, Giordani, Krizimanic
