LYMM 3, TOTTINGTON UNITED 1: AN early break from league action saw Tottington United make the long trip to take on Premier League side Lymm in the Lancashire Amateur Cup First Round.
Tottington welcomed back Dave Cosgrave and Rob Willcox but were still without Shaun Cockcroft whilst Chris Hutchinson and Jamie Murray were also missing.
Tottington made the first clear chance of the game when Scott Horsfield was sent clear, however his chip was weak and he couldnt add to his five-goal haul for this season.
Tottington were proving more than a match for their higher division rivals but then Lymm struck against the run of play.
Noel Cunningham almost had his shirt pulled off his back, but the referee failed to give a decision and the winger fired past James Deveney.
The goal rattled Tottington but they continued to play some neat football, however Lymm struck soon after with a fine goal.
A cross-field ball caught out the Tottington defence and the striker ran through to fire into the bottom corner.
The goal hurt Tottington and the rhythm seemed to disappear in the run up to half time with two yellow cards being dished out to Tottington players. The half-time break allowed the players to get themselves back together and they came out strong in the second half.
Deservedly, they got back into the game, when Cunninghams long range effort took a little bump off the pitch and over the keeper into the back of the net.
The goal spurred on Tottington and they went looking for an equaliser, unfortunately it was Lymm who grabbed the next goal when the striker rose highest to loop in a header.
The goal, along with several strange decisions from the referee seemed to demoralize Tottington as they picked up three more yellow cards before they were reduced to 10 men when Gavin Campbell was shown a straight red for a reckless challenge. TOTTY: J.Deveney, N.Cunningham, A.Simpson, G.Campbell, B.Campbell(c), I.Boyle (A.Ghassemi), A.Haslam, D.Cosgrave, S.Horsfield, R.Willcox, C.Rhodes.
l United's second team followed up last weeks 4-0 victory with a 3-0 win over Tonge United Reserves in the Second eleven Cup First Round.
Stuart Moth scored to add to his opening day hat trick and A. Walton and J. Walton also hit the target.
