EVANS CUP

IN this 83rd year of the competition for the Evans Cup first presented in 1922 by Councillor Evans it looked as though it was going to be an all-Nuttall final. However, one man, Brian Hay of Allens Green, gave a good account of himself and proved a worthy winner by defeating Derek Eatock 21-14 in the grand final.

PREMIER DIVISION

Black Lane B are champions and this has been one of the closest finishes for many seasons.

Black Lanes last match was against one of their nearest rivals, Hollinhurst A, who are a good side, especially on their tricky home green.

Hollinhurst brought in previous Waterloo winner, Gary Ellis, and with Paul Dudley in their side it looked a hard task for the Black Lane boys, but stirling performances from father and son, Peter and Stephen Holden, and Dave Wrights win 21-9 over Gary Ellis, paved the way for victory.

Young Beverley Harper of Hollinhurst led John Sandiford 14-3, only for the heavens to open and the green become waterlogged.

John, using his vast knowledge, stretched Beverley and she was unable to add to her score.

Well done to the Black Lane team who deserved their league win and for keeping the same squad all season and not signing star players.

Good luck to Matt ONeill and Gary Sandiford who have reached the last 64 of The Waterloo, playing on September 17 at Blackpool. Support will be welcome.

MEMORIAL CUP

THIS competition was held at Manchester Road Park on Sunday, September 11, 2005.

Celebrating their ruby wedding day on that date, Hughie and Linda Blenkharn, were among a good showing of local bowlers.

Unfortunately Hughie took an early bath, but Linda, partnered by that renowned Tottington bowler Roy Connell kept going strong.

In the other half of the draw Brian Hunter and Christine Robinson progressed steadily.

Meeting in the final, Roy led well with Linda contributing with some telling woods where necessary leading to a 21-12 victory.

RESULTS

Semi-finals: Brian Hunter & Christine Robinson beat Keith Gibbons and Vera Ashcroft; Roy Connell & Linda Blenkharn beat Albert Salmon & Dora Gibbons.

Final: Roy Connell & Linda Blenkharn 21-12 Brian Hunter & Christine Robinson.

The committee and members of Manchester Road Park would like to thank the Friends of NU West Co-op for their sponsorship along with those who helped to raise £195 for Bury Hospice.

BRaTs

(Sponsored by Queen Anne Glass Ltd)

Last week I reported on Barrie Robinson singing 3 wheels on my waggon. This week its another Barry who is thinking three is definitely NOT the magic number. Barry Hardman was unfortunately at the receiving end of a 21-3 trashing when playing against Division One leaders Calderdale in the Federation Team KO last Sunday.

The number three was also prominent in the overall outcome of the match, as the BRaTs side managed just three winners from ten.

Bury initially looked like running their opponents to a close result when the first six games were all shared, Barry Robinson slightly improved his previous game score of three, I say slightly, as he suffered another single figure defeat(6), but this was quickly offset by a superb win of 21-7 from Mick Howard.

The other games were less destructive in score, Paul Atherdens win to 14 came after a 1-1/2 hour marathon game of singles and Deborah Flint showed why she is flying high in the ladies circuit, she ended her opponents four week unbeaten run, with an equally good 21-18 victory, and with Alec Birtwistle and Tommy Taylor just losing to 18 & 15, the BRaTs side were level withfour to play.

Then came Barrys three, it might have been painful but it was quick, he was off the green that fast that some of the first session games were still in progress!

The remaining players fought on and appeared undeterred by this setback, but it soon became clear that it would not be a day for the BRaT Pack as Kevin Newbury, John Birtwistle and Ian Turrell all lost to 14, 15 & 20, thus giving the Calderdale side a comfortable 32 point winning margin and a place in the Semi-finals.

The BRaTs now look to this Sunday, They need a good result against Worth Valley and a little help from last months opponents Furness if they are to avoid relegation (Furness play third placed South Lancs. who go into the last match 10 points clear of Bury).

The home leg for Bury is on Sunnybank Social Club, Helmshore, whilst the away leg is at the Devonshire Bowling Club in the centre of Skipton, Yorkshire (behind Woolworths if youre interested). As always, any players that become unavailable should contact either Paul or Deborah on 01204 88 4635.
