I AM writing to bring some relief from the ongoing debate between 'Lex Luther' and Allan Ramsey.
I was shopping in Asda, Radcliffe, recently when suddenly, over the tannoy, came the rousing strains of Jerusalem - such a contrast to the 'muzak' usually heard in supermarkets - and I looked round in surprise to see almost everyone singing along!
One lady remarked that it was like being back in school assembly. I have never seen so many smiling faces, and people being pleasant to each other.
There was even a round of applause at the end. I doubt whether the National Anthem would have provoked such a response, but Jerusalem seemed to stir patriotic fervour all around the aisles! Sadly, it was followed by the usual stuff which washes over you, and we were all back to normal.
Asda was the last place I expected a sing-along, but well done to them for reminding us that we could do worse than this "green and pleasant land" , and for making my day.
I get rather angry when political correctness means that it is almost a sin to feel proud to be British.
