ONE of Bolton's top eye doctors has travelled to Portugal to share his expertise with world leading cataract surgeons.
Dr Jeff Kwartz has carried out research into the success of a new type of lense used in cataract surgery, and its effect on a patients sight after surgery.
He is now in Lisbon, Portugal, where he is presenting his findings to a conference of his colleagues.
Cataract surgeons at the Royal Bolton Hospital have introduced a more modern kind of lense, which they use on patients.
This lense reduces the risk of patients having further eyesight problems after surgery - previously this was just over 10 per cent of everyone who had a cataract operation.
Dr Kwartz said: "With the new lense this figure has been reduced to four per cent. The new lenses are quite widely used, but very little research has been carried out as to how effective it is and that is what we have done."
