A POST office for a town such as Bury is essential for the community, not just something which can be dispensed with because of the effort of having to find another building.
The large post office building in Crompton Street provided a good centralised service over many years for Bury and the surrounding areas, so apart from maintenance, which is something which has to be carried out on any building, why was the questionable step taken to move the services to within another shop, Forbuoys?
The post office business has continued to remain popular for local people and other shoppers to Bury, even at Forbuoys, showing that the need has remained, indeed probably increased, with the closures of local branch post offices which many of the elderly people are less able to rely on.
It is incredible that one of our most long-established and cherished organisations is now incapable of making the necessary forward plans for a smooth transition to ensure the continuity of post office services. As it is, some 10 weeks after the closure of Forbuoys, we don't have a town post office.
As a representative of a local tenant and resident community group, I strongly support what the leader of our council has to say and demand prompt suitable redress of this deplorable situation.
