ADDING fluoride to drinking water to improve the dental health of the children of Bolton is equivalent to using leeches for blood-letting to control high blood pressure!

Both are outdated and antiquated practices. This method is enforced mass medication of a toxic chemical and as Ian Upton, Chairman, BAFG wrote on September 10, it removes our freedom of choice.

In the 1960s when fluoride was hailed as the cure for dental decay, the only way to deliver it to the population was to add it to the drinking water. Now, 45 years on, there are many alternative and better ways to deliver fluoride to teeth without resorting to the enforced mass medication of adding it to the drinking water.

Adding fluoride to drinking water has now been banned by many European countries because of it's toxicity.

On August, 18 The Bolton Evening News reported that Chris Brooks, president of Boltons Dental Society, said: "The tooth brushing in Bolton is absolutely absymal . . . people need to do something to look after their teeth".

This is the real cause of poor dental health in the town, not lack of fluoridated drinking water and it is this issue that needs addressing.

The energies of the pro-fluoridation lobby would be better directed at helping and encouraging parents and children learn more about caring for their teeth by improving tooth care and eating a healthier diet, as advocated by Chris Brooks.

The pro-fluoridation lobby need to see the whole person not just a set of teeth.
