BOLTONS squalor squad has got the promise of better working conditions in its fight against grime.

The team has possibly the dirtiest job in the district. It has the task of cleaning up council houses before new tenants move in.

COUNCIL leaders at Bolton had a warm round of applause at the end of their meet the people act at the Town Hall.

But out of a population of more than 260,000, only around 50 showed up for what was billed as a unique experimental public meeting and several of those were councillors.

A PROPOSAL for widening the basis of talks on a five day week for shop assistants will be supported by the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers.

WHEN Counc. P. Rowson (Lab) pleaded with his colleagues on Worsley Council last night to put the brake on its overspill scheme and plan more schools, better transport, and recreational facilities before building more houses, his views were condemned by most of the members.

I have never head such nonsense, said Counc. J. Pennington, leader of the Labour Group.

PETER Syddall, 1 Starmount Place, Breightmet, preferred a charge against Elizabeth Ann Stanton (27), doubler, 14 Phoenix Street, and Alice Hayes (31), 4 Phoenix Street, at the Borough Police Court, this morning of stealing a sovereign and purse from him, but after hearing the evidence, the Magistrates discharged both the accused.

A shocking murder is reported.

A week ago Martha Smith (46), married, living apart from her husband, entered the service of a family as a domestic servant. Last night she was found dead in the basement of the house with her throat cut from ear to ear.

No weapon was found near, nor had anyone been noticed about the premises, but the police are in search of a suspected person.
