PAUL Jewell is happy not to have a monkey on his back - but he's not going ape, despite his side's impressive start to the season.

The Latics have recorded back-to-back victories against West Brom and Sunderland, putting them well ahead of schedule in their first-ever Premiership season.

But Jewell is refusing to get carried away

"One of the big positives is the psychological impact this start will have. It can get you down if people are constantly asking you about when you might win your first game or first away game?

"It can become a monkey on the back but I suppose we've got rid of ours early," he said, after Wigan recorded their second win in their opening four games.

"The evidence from the previous seasons shows it's difficult for the teams that come up into the Premiership to get going. It is a punishing league and every goal and every point is hard earned. For us to get two victories so early on is brilliant, but I can assure you no one here is getting carried away.

"It's been a trademark of my time here that we've never been a team that pats ourselves on the back or celebrates before a job is completed. We have six points and that's great, but now we need to build on this and carry forward all the hard work, otherwise it's wasted."

Last season, Crystal Palace and West Brom took eight matches to claim their first victory. Fellow promoted side Norwich took 14 games.
