WITH the media having ever more power and speed in reporting events it is not surprising that we are getting a more dramatic and detailed picture of life.

One undesirable picture that is now being painted is that of youth culture in Britain. It would seem that our young people are at ever increasing odds with the world and can find less to do that is positive.

Young people need provision. Provision supplied by organisations like the Harmony Youth Project. The local authorities have large budgets to create and assist in these provisions. So I have a question.

Why are organisations like the Harmony Youth Projects receiving no help, financial or otherwise from Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council?

Harmony has worked with disaffected young people from the entire Bolton area for years providing entertainments, training, vocational guidance, workshops in music production, sound engineering, IT, software, DJing, MC and rapping, art, design, filmmaking, and now open college qualifications. The organisation has just completed a summer roadshow covering all the main areas of Bolton, and provideed entertainment and challenges to youngsters for free.

The council appears not to be interested.

Harmony has offered places for referrals to train in new and exciting fields such as digital sound, but the council is not interested in these jobs.

Harmony has some of the most highly skilled staff in Bolton in their chosen field, willing to pass on tips and tricks of the trade, but again the council does not seem to be interested.

Instead Harmony has to find funding from Europe and the South of England to keep going.

However, Harmony will continue to grow and teach. Its membership increases every month. It will put on bigger and better shows and will continue to work with Boltons talented and deserving young people.
