TWO multi-storey blocks of apartments could be built in the same busy Bolton town centre street under new plans submitted to planning chiefs.

The blocks would be put up by separate developers in Great Moor Street.

One proposal is for an eight-storey block on the site of the former George Hotel.

The other is for a six-storey block, with a penthouse set back on the top of the building, on the former site of the Gregory and Porritts store. Six shop units will be included in the ground floor.

Gregory and Porritts moved from Great Moor Street to its new home in Bark Street several years ago.

A small number of letters have been received by Bolton Council's planning department objecting to both proposals on the grounds that the height of the buildings would be out of character with the rest of the area.

But developer Fred Bridge said his £7 million development on the former Gregory and Porritts site opposite the Old School Rooms was "just what Bolton needs."

He said: "In Manchester, skyscrapers are going up and we cannot afford to fall behind.

"I am sure the development will be successful. It is going to be a very important site in Bolton and a prestigious high quality building."

The plans for George Hotel site have been submitted by Monaco Developments. The company has previously been granted outline planning permission for a similar scheme on the site, but have amended the plans to increase the number of two-bedroomed apartments, reducing the overall number of homes in the development from 28 to 22.

Bolton Council's planning committee will consider the applications on Thursday and is expected to delegate the decision for both developments to senior officers in the regeneration and development department so that they can agree details with the developers.

Planning officer Phil Green said: "Monaco Developments' proposal is considered to provide a significant element of urban regeneration within Bolton town centre contributing to reduced reliance on the car.

"The design of the building will offer a positive focus for Great Moor Street and contribute to the potential for further redevelopment in the area.

"The other scheme is considered to improve the architectural diversity of Bolton town centre without impacting on adjacent residents or important buildings."
