SHEFFIELD Steelers have re-signed centre Mike Peron for a third season.
"I always said that I never wanted to leave Sheffield and that was the case" said Peron upon signing his one year contract
Coach Paul Heavey was relieved to beat off competition from Nottingham and Newcastle for Peron's signature. "Mike is a key guy and one we wanted here to build a winning franchise. Hs is a core player in my thinking, its his third season and you need guys who are going to bring continuity to your team.
"We also know what we are getting, there are few risks, you get leadership guts, character and a guy who will go that extra mile to help your team win. Peron was obviously going to get interest from other coaches, he is so well respected in the game, not only by coached but also by players. When I talk to guys one of the first questions they ask me is "is that Mike Peron coming back". Well from today I can tell them yes he is."
Peron said that the way he has been treated in Sheffield was a key reason for his return. "The way I and Jacqueline have been treated in Sheffield is second to none. I want to help the Steelers have a great year and win something for the people in Sheffield. One year without a trophy is one year too many."
