BOLTON homes could soon feature in a warm home league.

The council is considering introducing an information base for houses which will incorporate an energy efficiency rating for the the different types of homes in the borough.

The proposed league is part of the council's local agenda 21 action plan and housing strategy to make the most efficient use of energy.

It follows the introduction of the Home Energy Conservation Act, which places new duties on councils to prepare energy conservation plans.

Bolton's aim is to implement a policy giving priority to energy conservation; training housing and other staff so that they will be able to offer up-to-date information on energy use; and to work with housing associations, developers and private landlords to make sure that their homes are energy efficient.

Details of Bolton's aims will be outlined at a seminar organised by the housing and planning and engineering services departments.

Cllr Noel Spencer, vice-chairman of Bolton's housing committee, said: "Making the best use of our diminishing energy resources is of prime importance.

"At the same time, creating energy-efficient homes is a very effective way of improving the living conditions of people who are on low incomes.

"There are important socio-economic factors in using our energy in the best possible way.

"While we have placed high priority over the years on increasing the energy efficiency of the borough's housing we are taking things a step further.

"The seminar will provide a basis for developing the strategy."

The seminar will be held on Friday in the Town Hall.

Speakers will include Glyn Trumper of Norweb and William Gillis, deputy director of Neighbourhood Energy Action.
