BOLTON firemen have refused to carry out one of their traditional weekend jobs - cooking meals for prisoners in the town's police station cells. Cooking is classed under "special service" duties which the firemen are refusing to do in support of their claim for shorter hours and more pay. But the prisoners will not go hungry. Police officers will bring them their meals from a local restaurant.

INTERESTING figures about the cost of building houses in Bolton were given by Ald. Tong at Bolton Town Council meeting today. Tenders for 52 new houses on the Cameron estate show that the price for a three-bedroomed house was £1,300 for one type and £1,355 for another, and when the cost of land and the making of streets and sewers was added, the cost worked out at £1,500 for the £1,355 type.
He recalled that in 1938-39 the Housing Committee built houses in Kay-st. at about £350, including land, streets and sewers, and it did not appear that the increase from that figure to £1,500 could be justified. 125 YEARS AGO
LIBRARY AND MUSEUM
A meeting of this committee took place on Monday evening, when accounts amounting to £73 7s were passed for payment. The librarian's usual report was received and entered into the minutes. The thanks of the committee were ordered to be given to John Hick, Esq., MP, for his presentation to the library of 370 blue books and estimates. It was resolved that the thanks of the committee be given to Mr Porter for his presentation to the museum of one box of British butterflies.
