IT came to pass that after two days and nights, four weary youths completed a Bible reading marathon on the steps of St. Peter's Methodist Church, Daubhill, Bolton.

The youths, Mervyn Gledhill, aged 24, of St. Bede's Avenue, Denis Flanagan, aged 16, of Penarth Street, David Hatton, aged 17, of Roseneath Road, and Stephen Boyce, aged 17, of Trevor Avenue, all Bolton, took part in the sponsored 50-hour marathon to raise money for muscular dystrophy research.

GENERAL Prince Higashikuni, the Japanese Prime Minister, resigned with his Cabinet today. It is thought the decision was prompted by General McArthur's far reaching directive, which removed Yamazaki, the Home Minister, from his post. General McArthur ordered the release of all political prisoners, the dissolution of the "Thought Control Police" (the Japanese Gestapo), the abrogation of all laws restricting civil liberties, and Yamazaki's immediate removal from office.

125 YEARS AGO

A MEETING of the shopkeepers of Little Lever was held on Monday evening in the Congregational Schools, under the presidency of Mr W. Walker, to consider the practicability of adopting the early closing movement in the township. The following resolution was unanimously agreed upon:- Resolved that, on and after the 10th inst., the shopkeepers of Little Lever close their respective establishments at the following hours, viz, Mondays at 9pm, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8.30pm, Fridays at 9.30pm, and Saturdays at 11pm. It is hoped that the movement may be seconded by the public making their purchases at an early hour.
