PARENTS should be warned that car air bags can kill if used with certain child safety seats, says a Euro MP. This week the European Commission officially recognised that inflating air bags can crush babies in rear-facing child seats.

But Euro MP Gary Titley says new European laws forcing car manufacturers to print warnings on new cars is not enough to save lives.

He is calling on the government to mount a publicity campaign to warn parents of the dangers.

Mr Titley said: "Rear-facing child seats and air bags are good safety measures when used separately - but together they can be a lethal mix.

"In a collision, an air bag inflating can only too easily crush a young child in a rear-facing child seat.

"At last there is official recognition that rear-facing child seats and air bags are a potentially dangerous combination.

"But further action is needed before more children are killed in accidents which, without the air bag, would have left them unscathed in their child seats."
