SIR: On radio recently - the question was asked "What is going to happen to the 1lb glass jar". The answer is it is still being used - it now contains 454 grammes.
This has been so for ages. My tub of margarine contains 500 grammes which is just over 1lb and is half a kilo. One kilogramme is about 2lb 2oz.
I don't think older people will have any trouble. As there is a period of years before shops have to weigh, loose goods in metric - I don't think small shops will suffer - - they will probably need new scales by then.
