A FORMER director-in-charge of the British Aerospace factory at Lostock has died, aged 76. Mr James McGregor Smith of Westcliffe Road, Bolton held the position from May, 1980 to the end of December, 1982.
Scots-born Mr Smith took over from Mr Bill Neill after working with him as financial director and deputy director-in-charge for six years previously.
Mr Smith joined the aircraft industry after the war and the old De Havilland company transferred him to Bolton in 1947.
His career progressed with them until Hawker Siddeley took over in 1963 and he became financial director of A.V. Roe, a position which allowed him to continue living in Bolton.
In 1973 he and Mr Neill were brought in by Hawker Siddeley to run the Lostock factory, which employed 3,500 people in those days.
The service and committal will be at Overdale West Chapel, Bolton on Wednesday at 1.30pm.
