SIR: It would come as no surprise to many to hear of the defection of Mr Howarth from the Conservative party to the Labour party. To seek tax reductions or benefits to the already wealthy at the expense of those on low incomes must be seen as a bit sick.
By sticking the boot in to those who are already down, has to be seen as a most cowardly, if not dubious act, or ideology. Ideology is one thing, the practical reality is another. It can be seen that attitudes have not changed from the last couple of centuries when there was no wrong seen in children going down mines.
The practical reality ensures that those in need suffer most. That is the basis of their policies.
As a percentage of income the wealthy do not pay their way, having extracted that wealth from society in the first place. No wonder Mr Howarth is disillusioned.
Following that realisation to a better conscience, would Messrs Sackville and Thurnham also have a change of heart towards a more decent humanly society, and give the low paid a better chance? There is no price on morals, or scruples.
