A COUPLE from Horwich who have been a driving force in making the Bolton RSPB members' group one of the most successful in Britain have been rewarded for their efforts.
Tony Johnson and his wife Chris, of Lever Park Avenue, have received the President's Award - an inscribed crystal kingfisher - in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the RSPB.
The couple, who have worked voluntarily for the bird conservation organisation since 1978, were chosen for the award by RSPB president and broadcaster Julian Pettifer. Tony has been the group leader since 1986.
The award was presented during a public film show at Bolton School Girls' Division by David Spivack, RSPB regional youth and volunteers officer.
Under Tony's leadership, the Bolton group has flourished and more than £40,000 has been raised for local, national and international conservation projects.
Chris and Tony have both made wildlife conservation their campaigning cause as well as their hobby and have been leading lights in the battle to preserve Red Moss.
