CAMPAIGNERS have taken a giant leap forward in their bid to bring rail travel back to the people of Horwich.

At a packed public meeting, the men who travelled on the last loco out of the town 30 years ago, received overwhelming support from the community.

"Knowing people are behind us and supporting our efforts makes a very real difference," said Stephen Leyland, a member of the campaign team.

The evening's key speaker was Dr Paul Salveson, one of the men aboard the loco in 1965, who is now a recognised figure in the railway world.

Dr Salveson has been involved in numerous battles up and down the country to re-open defunct railway stations and improve services generally.

Mr Leyland said: "Horwich is becoming more and more congested and there will come a time when people can no longer get where they want to go on the roads.

"For many people a railway station is the only way forward. If the new Wanderers stadium opens just outside Horwich, a station will be a must."

Other speakers at last night's meeting were Lee Johnson and Vernon Sidlow, who explained the possible routes the railway may follow.

Another meeting will be held on Monday, November 20, at Partners Restaurant, Horwich, at 7.30pm.
