THE first priority in the municipal programme was the building of good substantial homes, said Mr F.B. Emery, Conservative candidate in Halliwell Ward, at a meeting in St Paul's Parish Room, last evening. In Bolton the target was 10,000 houses in the next 10 years. Sufficient land had already been acquired for the erection of 2,500 during the next three years, and in the meantime other sites would be purchased.
GALE AND FLOODS AT BLACKPOOL
AT high tide yesterday (eleven a.m.) a violent gale was blowing from the west, and the scene was truly magnificent, though there was destruction in every wave. The sea broke over the stone defences of the beach and promenade with irresistible fury, covering the latter to a depth of more than two feet in some places. At one place, a little beyond the south jetty, the fence has been thus damaged to the extent of 20 to 30 yards. A considerable portion of the promenade and carriage drive has been washed away, and the crests of the waves broke through the bedroom windows of the Star Inn, at the extreme end of South Shore. This part of Blackpool seems, indeed, doomed to annihilation.
