BOLTON has been given Government permission to suspend 19 smoke control orders because of the threat of a smokeless fuel famine.
SIR,- I had a nervous breakdown two years ago, and no wonder.
I had to destroy a bed owing to water coming through the bedroom ceiling, and even coming through the ceiling downstairs. I applied for a permit for a new bed and was refused one. It was for my two boys. One, age 23 (R.N.) is expected home next week. The other (21) is in the RAF. I have one bedroom for three girls, whose ages range from eight to 16 years. My husband and I have to sleep downstairs. My house has been bad for years. I can't get anything done to prevent water coming through every time it rains.
My husband is one of the few who came back from the Dardanelles in the last war and his sons have helped the country to win freedom in this. But where are those homes? If this is winning the war, God help us if we had lost it.
Yours, etc. A WORRIED MOTHER.
YESTERDAY evening, the organ in Bridge-street chapel, having been thoroughly cleaned and repaired, was re-opened in the presence of a large assemblage. Mr J. Turton Parkin, organist of Norfolk-street chapel, Sheffield, performed on the instrument, and the choir sang a selection of sacred music. The collection amounted to £20 1s 0d. The organ has been cleaned and repaired by Mr James Hurst, organ builder, of Bolton, and Mr Parkin expressed himself highly pleased with the manner in which it had been accomplished.
THE AURORA BOREALIS
This electric phenomina was very visible last night in this district between six and seven o'clock. A little before six o'clock the lurid glare in the sky led many to conjecture that a huge fire was raging somewhere in the vicinity; whilst others, priding themselves on their weather-wisdom, said the appearance of the sky was only the indication of approaching high winds. The heavens were lighted up for almost an hour, varying in intensity, and at intervals after the aurora was plainly visible. The phenomenon was also visible in London, Liverpool, Manchester and many other parts of the country.
