Wanderers will have to do it the hard way if they are to match last season's sensational run to Wembley in the Coca-Cola Cup.
Today's fourth round draw offered the Burnden boys the prospect of an away tie against either Bradford City or Norwich City, provided they can first overcome a tricky replay at Leicester on November 8.
"We've surrendered the initiative to Leicester in so far as home advantage is concerned and we're obviously disappointed not to have a home tie to look forward to in the next round," was Roy McFarland's reaction to the draw.
"But we still have a very realistic chance of progressing in the competition."
If Bradford, who drew 0-0 at Carrow Road last night, can complete the job at Valley Parade in a fortnight, McFarland could be booking a return to the club he managed between 1981-82 and where his partner Colin Todd was coach before joining Wanderers in 1992.
Bury have the incentive of a home tie against Premier League Southampton if they can beat Reading at Elm Park in their third round tie, which was sensationally abandoned on Tuesday with the Shakers 2-0 up.
