SIR: Thank you for printing my letter (October 6) regarding "stop these snarl-ups" (Beaumont Road/Chorley New Road junction).
I also sent the same letter to the Highways Department at Bolton Town Hall.
You may be interested to note that I have just received a very satisfactory reply from D A Sutton (Head of Highway Planning and Regulations).
He states that plans are in hand for this junction to undergo major improvement, but this will probably be in 1998, due to public consultation, design, planning permission and, of course, finance. However, he agreed that my idea of painting the signs of TOWN CENTRE and RING ROAD on the appropriate lanes of Beaumont Road -"may help to guide drivers into the correct lanes!" and accordingly arrangements have been made to undertake this task.
I am, of course, delighted that you were prepared to highlight the matter and that common sense prevails and that the Highways Department are prepared to listen to any reasonable suggestions.
My thanks to all concerned at the BEN and Bolton Town Hall!
Mr W Riley, Barnhill, Westhoughton.
