PUBLIC opinion, led by the Bolton Evening News has persuaded councillors to think again about ways of keeping Bolton's historic textile machinery in town.
Thhe BEN, history societies and the public have opposed plans to loan machines - including Crompton's Mule - to two out-of-town museums.
We recognise the problems faced by Dr John Gray, head of Bolton's museums. The sites currently available are not suitable for various reasons.
But Bolton feels strongly that some way must be found to keep this essential part of our heritage.
The suggestion from Cllr Steve Hynes that we look towards the National Lottery for money to fund a purpose-built unit to house the machines is a good one.
Certainly every attempt must be made to find a permanent home for the cotton heirlooms, which are of interest not only to Bolton people, but to the increasing number of visitors which the town is attracting.
