SIR: With regard to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 1995.

This year's Remembrance Sunday Service takes place at the War Memorial on the Town Hall Square on November 12, at 10.50am and I would like to extend an invitation to all residents of the Borough to attend to remember the servicemen and women who gave their lives for their country.

Since its creation more than 70 years ago, the work of the Royal British Legion is constantly changing to meet differing needs and offer support to this special community. In one year alone, over 180,000 calls for help have been answered.

Each year more than 4,000 people are able to convalesce and, with the Legion's help and support, more than 600 severely disabled men and women can take a holiday. The Legion also helps more than a thousand people to visit the graves of their loved ones overseas.

Serving in the Falklands, the Gulf War, Northern Ireland, Bosnia or Rwanda can leave many kinds of scars. The Legion is committed to helping with the healing of these scars.

The Poppy Appeal highlights the work of the Royal British Legion. I hope the people of Bolton will give generously again this year and help support this very worthwhile cause.

Cllr Frank Alan Rushton,

Mayor of Bolton.
