BRITAIN has well and truly broken the world's air speed record. Just one hour after Group-Captain H.J. Wilson in his Meteor jet plane Britannia had achieved the record average speed of 602 miles an hour over the Herne Bay test course this morning, Mr Eric Greenwood set out in his yellow Meteor and covered the four runs at an average speed of 606 miles an hour. These trial runs were officially timed and observed. and may be submitted to the Federation Aeronautique Internationale as the officially recognized world air speed record.

ON Saturday evening a well-known Liverpool gentleman was subjected to a most painful and brutal insult in the Southport railway station while waiting for the 7.45 train to Liverpool. Having five minutes to spare he crossed to the fruit market to make a purchase there, and then hurried back so that he might not miss his train. From what now occurred it is supposed that a number of coarse fellows were then on the look out for a man who either had or was reported to have advertised for a wife. At all events, on the gentleman referred to turning to quit the market someone shouted, "That's the man". In perfect innocence, at first, of the language being applied to himself, he passed them and ran to the station in the hurry to catch his train.

Soon he found himself pursued. A crowd quickly collected, took up the shout and followed him into the station. No policeman could be got; and, until the train started (several minutes late) he had to bear the yelling and brutal abuse of the mob of roughs.

We are told that efforts will be made to prosecute the principal offenders.
