GT Harwood TOWN 0 LEIGH RMI 2 LEIGH RMI continued their rapid rise up the UniBond Division One table with a clear-cut victory at Great Harwood on Saturday.
They have now taken 20 points out of a possible 24; haven't conceded a goal in their last five games and extended their unbeaten run to eight matches.
Tony Edwards scored both goals, the second gem of a solo effort, and it was the first time the midfielder had been on the scoresheet for the club.
The first half was a scrappy affair with neither side able to create enough to trouble the keepers and Leigh's biggest danger was the gale force wind blowing down the considerable slope.
After the break Leigh completely dominated and took the lead in the 55th minute. A short corner from Chris Walmesley was played to Edwards on the edge of the box and he drilled his shot past the diving keeper.
Three minutes later Tony Briffa rattled the post with a header after superb build-up play by Walmesley and Chris Shaw, but 15 minutes from time Edwards sealed it for RMI with an individual cracker. He won the ball with a crunching tackle in midfield, dribbled through the Great Harwood defence before side-footing past the helpless keeper.
Manager Steve Waywell said: "It is never an easy place to go to but we never looked in danger and the confidence among the players is sky-high.
"After we had battled in the first half to keep a clean sheet there was only going to be one winner, but the test will come when we have to travel to Morecambe tomorrow in the ATS Trophy."
