SIR: I would like the opportunity, through your columns, to express my thanks to the Local Education Authority for their support during the last two weeks.

The fabric of our school suffered extensive flood damage following the very cold weather and the resulting burst pipes.

Without the help and support of Mr Glen Bates, Mr Ian Spann and Mr Barry Lowe, from Building Maintenance & Architecture, who were on site as soon as the flooding was discovered on January 2, organising remedial work, the school would not have re-opened as soon as it did. I am equally grateful to D.L.O. Cleaning Services who set to work immediately, clearing flood water (which affected every room in school) and then cleaning the building when it was possible to do so.

Major incidents of this type are thankfully rare but nonetheless very traumatic for a school, however, it is gratifying to know that in times of crisis, a school as part of a Local Education Authority, can rely on help and support from that Authority.

Finally, I am indebted to the school staff who have worked very hard as a team, to ensure the building would be habitable for the return of the children on January 10.
